Kanaan Wins in Dramatic Fashion at Kansas
Tony Kanaan picked up his first victory of the season in a thrilling race at Kansas Speedway, taking the checkered flag ahead of his Andretti Green Racing teammate, Dan Wheldon, in the sixth-closest finish in Indy Racing League history.
Looking for extra time, Kanaan took on fuel only -- no tires -- on his final pit stop of the day, putting him in prime position to battle Wheldon, on fresh tires, for the victory. Kanaan's set held up to carry him across the finish line 0.0120 of a second ahead of his teammate.
"The tires were awesome," said Kanaan. "We did a splash-and-go at the end -- we kept the tires on and they were perfect. I cannot stress enough how good Firestone is when it comes to tire wear."
Quote from Joe Barbieri, manager of motorsports, Firestone Racing:
"We were incredibly pleased with tire performance here all weekend, and that certainly includes that incredible finish. Not only do drivers have to have enormous trust in their tires to battle side-by-side at those speeds the way that Tony and Dan did today, but it really makes us smile when we see teams trust their old sets to perform at the same consistent level as when they put them on the car. One of our goals is always to give these teams and drivers a tire they don't have to worry about -- so they can just go out and race their race. I think that's what we saw here today and that makes us very happy."
Firestone Performance Award winner: Dan Wheldon earned the $10,000 Firestone Performance Award for leading lap 111 of today's race. The award commemorates the fact that Firestone has competed in every IRL IndyCar Series event since the league's inaugural race in 1996. Today's race was the 111th in league history. Wheldon will be presented with a $10,000 check during pre-race ceremonies for the Firestone Indy 200 at Nashville Superspeedway on July 16.
