Indy Racing League - Round 9 of 15
Ameristar Casino Indy 200 at Kansas Speedway, Kansas City, Kan.
Opening Day Notes - Friday, July 5, 2002
Race Distance: 300 miles (200 laps on the 1.5-mile, D-shaped oval)
Firehawks Supplied: The Firestone Racing program brought 1,256 Firehawk tires to Kansas Speedway for the Ameristar Casino Indy 200, enough to provide eight sets per car as determined by Indy Racing League officials.
The Firehawks were produced at the Bridgestone/Firestone Technical Center in Akron, Ohio, and feature the same compound and construction as used during the June 8 event at Texas Motor Speedway. This Firehawk specification is well suited for high ambient and track temperatures.
This Weekend's Event: When IRL qualifying action ends Saturday, the Firestone Racing program will celebrate its 50th pole in Indy Racing League competition. Drivers who have earned IRL poles thus far on Firehawks include: Greg Ray (14), Tony Stewart (8), Arie Luyendyk (4), Gil de Ferran, Sam Hornish Jr. and Scott Sharp (3 each), Jaques Lazier, Buddy Lazier and Mark Dismore (2 each), and Scott Brayton, Sam Schmidt, Scott Goodyear, Jeff Ward, Helio Castroneves, Eddie Cheever Jr., Bruno Junqueira and Tomas Scheckter (1 each).
Quote from Firestone Motorsports Executive Director Al Speyer: "It's great to be back in Kansas, especially with the debut event of the Indy Racing Infiniti Pro Series. We couldn't be prouder that all Pro Series cars will be equipped with Firestone Firehawk racing tires. We have a number of old friends in the group of team owners and associates, so this news series allows us to continue a working relationship with some really good people. On the IRL side of this weekend's activities, the heat and track configuration will demand much from our tires, and car setups will again be an important factor in how the tires perform. Our engineers will be on site, offering their services to teams, helping to make sure the Firehawks perform up to their capabilities." <pre> Firestone History at Kansas: Year IRL pole winner on Firestone tires: IRL race winner on Firestone tires: 2001 Scott Sharp (216.175 mph) Eddie Cheever Jr. (149.914 mph)
