Team effort gives Scheckter record-breaking pole at Kansas, Cheever qualifies third.
Red Bull Cheever Racing teammates Eddie Cheever Jr. and Tomas Scheckter worked together to capture the pole position for the Ameristar Casino Indy 200. Using feedback from Cheever on his third-place qualifying run, Scheckter was able to break the track record with a lap of 218.547 mph.
Cheever held the pole for much of the qualifying session after a record-breaking lap of 217.649 mph. After Sam Hornish Jr. turned in a lap of 217.743 mph, Scheckter turned Cheever's advice into his second pole of the season.
The Infiniti Indy V8 engine, built by TWR Engines, has powered three pole positions this season - all with Red Bull Cheever Racing. Cheever won the pole in April at California Speedway, and Scheckter won the pole in June at Texas Motor Speedway.
Tomas Scheckter on Qualifying: "The track changed a lot from this morning. We had a good idea of what happened because Eddie came to me and the engineers and told us what was going on. Really, it was an easy job for me. Fortunately for me, I went out a little later. Unfortunately for Eddie, he went out earlier and was kind of the guinea pig in the situation. I am pleased to have another pole position for Red Bull Cheever Racing."
Eddie Cheever Jr. on Qualifying: "I am proud of Tomas. His growth over this season has been very rapid. Once we got past the first part of the season, we worked very well together. I bet Ron Hemelgarn $50 that Tomas was going to get the pole. So I am $50 richer and very proud that we have a Red Bull car on pole. With the debut of the Infiniti Pro Series this weekend the folks at TWR Engines have been very busy with the two Infiniti powerplants. I am very pleased with the work they have done with the Infiniti engine. We really have to thank them for their part in getting the Red Bull cars first and third in the field today."
