FONTANA, California (February 4, 2003) -- Following a full day of media interviews, Team 7- Eleven's Tony Kanaan kicked off the on-track portion of this year's 2003 IndyCar Series Test in the West on the Tuesday, by posting the third quickest time of the day at California Speedway, the 2-mile superspeedway in Fontana, California. Kanaan, who was driving a 2003 Dallara/Honda/Firestone for only the third time this season, ran 98 laps and posted a fast lap of 222.547 mph (32.3527 seconds) to claim the third spot.
Michael Andretti, who will also drive for Team 7-Eleven for the first four races of the 2003 IndyCar season, ran a few laps in the early morning for photographers, but spent the day working with Kanaan and Andretti Green Racing teammates, Dario Franchitti and Dan Wheldon in his new capacity as team owner. Team 7-Eleven's technical partners Dario Franchitti, in the Alpine/Archipelago/Motorola entry and Dan Wheldon, driving the Klein Tools/Jim Beam entry were fourth and 15th quickest at the end of Tuesday's testing.
Felipe Giaffone was quickest of the day with a fast lap of 225.714 mph (31.8988 seconds), while Tomas Scheckter was second with a lap time of 223.186 mph (32.2601 seconds).
Test in the West resumes this Friday at Phoenix International Raceway in Arizona. The 2003 Indy Racing League IndyCar Series season opens with a race in Miami-Homestead on March 2. Andretti Green

"We came here to Test in the West just to run. The Fontana race isn't until later in the year, so in terms of giving us information for then, a lot will probably change. We've got four cars with us and it's good to be able to discuss what we've experienced. Of course I'm happy to be third quickest for the day, but I was really also trying to experiment, run in traffic; get a feel for the car. I'm glad we were fast out the box, it's only my fourth time in this type of car and it's been a learning experience. It's great to have Michael (Andretti) around, he was there with me all day today and it really helped. Let's go to Phoenix now and see what we can do there."
Kim Green, President -- Andretti Green Racing
"There's no question that the cars all look great out on the racetrack. I've think we've done well with all of our paint schemes. We don't race here until September and potentially a lot of things will change by then, so it was really a day for a shakedown test, learn some things and getting some data for Honda. All in all it was pretty good day. I've got to say that everyone on the team has made a great effort in getting these cars ready; it's certainly been a big undertaking. But we got it done, and everyone has done a great job."
