Treadway Racing News Leffler Gets First Shot at the Big Oval; Tire Tests at Indianapolis
Indianapolis, IN: Shortly after his first introduction to an Indy-style car, USAC star Jason Leffler realized a dream this week as Firestone tire testing allowed him to take his first laps on the famed Indianapolis oval. Leffler, who is a proven talent in the National Midget and Silver Crown series was tenacious and took to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway with the ease of a seasoned veteran.
Earlier this season, Treadway Racing signed the Long Beach, California native to a tire-testing agreement that allowed him the opportunity to expand his racing horizons to include the Indy Racing League. Leffler, who is currently leading both the Midget and Silver Crown series has logged a substantial amount of miles during testing this year-but none more important to him than last week.
"It was a great experience," stated the swift 23-year-old. "I don't think it has really hit me yet. I was concentrating so hard on the job at hand, the track and our speed, that it hasn't registered yet. It probably won't hit me until later, when I am casually driving by."
It must have been a combination of that concentration and raw talent that allowed him to settle into the car so quickly yesterday. After a half day session on the track, Leffler made his mark with a speed of 221 mph-a speed which would have put him in the middle of the front row for the start of this year's Indianapolis 500.
Impressed with his talent and skills, the Treadway Racing team has made a concerted effort to assist the young phenomenon and provide him the opportunities his potential demands. Leffler will continue to tire test for the team until a mutually acceptable level of sponsorship is secured for the 1999 season.
