CARPENTER GIVES VISION RACING FIRST TOP FIVE QUALIFYING RUN OF SEASON
NEWTON, Iowa -- Prior to this weekend, Vision Racing driver Ed Carpenter sounded like a broken record. When asked about the 2007 IndyCar Series season to-date, Carpenter repeatedly noted that he and his teammates, A.J. Foyt IV and Tomas Scheckter, were due for a little good fortune. And rather than just wait for it to come his way, Carpenter was determined to go out and earn it.
In qualifying today for the Iowa Corn Indy 250, presented by Ethanol at the new Iowa Speedway, Carpenter did just that. He qualified the No. 20 Hitachi Power Tools/Vision Racing Dallara/Honda/Firestone in the fifth position, which not only gives the team its first top five qualifying run of the year, but Carpenter's second best qualifying run of his IndyCar Series career.
Carpenter's best qualifying run came last season in the No. 20 car when he started fourth at Michigan International Speedway. His previous best start this season was eighth at Milwaukee, earlier this month.
Carpenter will be vying for his first top five finish of the season and third top-10 when the green flag drops tomorrow.
Starting 10th in the team's No. 22 Dallara/Honda/Firestone, Foyt earned his second best qualifying spot of the season. In the season-opener at Homestead-Miami Speedway, Foyt led his teammates with a ninth place start.
Foyt will be attempting to score his sixth running finish in eight races this year, as well as challenge for his second top-10 finish of the season.
The team's No. 2 entry, driven by Scheckter, will start 14th in tomorrow's inaugural race. Scheckter has five top-10 finishes already this season and will be looking to move his way up to a sixth on the year, tomorrow afternoon.
Ed Carpenter -- No. 20 Hitachi Power Tools/Vision Racing Dallara/Honda/Firestone
On qualifying: "We did a 17.66 (second lap) pretty much by ourselves in practice so I knew we had the speed in the car. It seemed like the track slowed down a little bit so I was hoping to run a 17.70, but I think we ran a 17.71 or 17.72, so that's good. You know, to put the Hitachi Power Tools car in the top five is great. It's my second best qualifying effort ever and it's a good place to have it at a short track that's been really competitive all weekend. Just take a look at the top five and you can see it's made up of all different teams so it's going to be a good race and this track has kind of evened the whole thing out a little bit.
A.J. Foyt IV -- No. 22 Vision Racing Dallara/Honda/Firestone
On qualifying: "The car has been spectacular since we unloaded it here at the track. The guys have been working really hard with not being to test here, but I've got no complaints. I've felt very comfortable since first getting out on the track. It's a beautiful place to come race, the track is awesome and it's going to be a very exciting race."
Tomas Scheckter -- No. 2 Vision Racing Dallara/Honda/Firestone
On qualifying: "It's just slow. The car has been slow since we unloaded it. I've tried about everything and trimmed it out as much as possible and trying to push it as hard as I can, but we are just coming up short. Regardless, we will come out ready to race tomorrow for sure and give it our best."
