LEBANON, Tenn. (July 20, 2001) -- Infiniti drivers both qualified in the top ten for the Harrah's Indy 200 at Nashville Superspeedway, with Eddie Cheever Jr. starting fifth and Robbie Buhl starting seventh.
Cheever made over a mile-per-hour improvement from his first-day practice times, running a 199.100 mph lap in qualifying for the MBNA Pole. His fifth place effort is the fifth time in nine races that he has qualified in the top five this season with the Infiniti Indy 35A engine.
Robbie Buhl, who was fastest yesterday, was third fastest in the practice session prior to qualifying with a 200.858 mph lap. In qualifying, Buhl was the first driver on track after an afternoon storm washed away the rubber buildup, making the track more slippery. His fast lap of 198.531 mph was seventh fastest.
Live coverage of the Harrah's Indy 200 will air on ESPN at 8 p.m. (EDT) Saturday, July 21, and "Indy Racing 2Day" will air at 5:30 p.m. (EDT) on ESPN2.
Eddie Cheever Jr., No. 51 Cheever Indy Racing Infiniti (Qualified 5th): "We've been chasing the car the whole weekend, and we made some changes before qualifying. We've had too much push all the time. The car was capable of doing more than I did with it today. We should have been faster by about half a mile per hour. I left a little bit of time in Turns 1 and 2. It was unfortunate that we missed the last five minutes in practice earlier today when it started to rain."
Robbie Buhl, No. 24 Team Purex Dreyer & Reinbold Racing GForce-Infiniti (Qualified 7th): "I am very disappointed with our qualifying run. It was two-tenths (of a second) off what we had earlier today in practice. We could have gone quicker than we did earlier, but because we were the first car out after the rain, we slid around a bit and I couldn't get the car wound up. It's really disappointing because I think we had the package to be on the front row."
