INDIANAPOLIS, Friday, March 14, 2001 - TeamXtreme Racing filed an entry March 16 for the 85th Indianapolis 500 and joined forces with longtime Indy Racing team owner Jonathan Byrd to file a second entry for the Greatest Spectacle in Racing. Airton Daré was named as the driver of the TeamXtreme entry, with Jaques Lazier nominated to drive the Jonathan Byrd TeamXtreme Racing entry. The 85th Indianapolis 500 is scheduled for May 27. Entries must be postmarked by April 11. All drivers will compete for one of the 33 starting spots in the world's most prestigious auto race. Daré, 2000 Indy Racing Rookie of the Year, will attempt to make his second start at Indy in the #88 1-800-BAR-NONE TeamXtreme G Force/Oldsmobile/Firestone, with an identical backup car entered. Dare, from Bauru, Brazil, started 21st and finished 25th, eliminated after engine problems last year at Indianapolis. Derrick Stepan is the chief mechanic for the TeamXtreme entry. Lazier, from Vail, Colo., also will try to make his second Indianapolis 500 start in the #77 Jonathan Byrd's Cafeteria TeamXtreme G Force/Oldsmobile/Firestone, with an identical backup car entered. "TeamXtreme is proud to announce an alliance with Jonathan Byrd on our second car," said John Lopes, TeamXtreme general manager. "This announcement comes on the heels of discussions with Jonathan Byrd during the entire offseason."

Lazier, younger brother of 1996 Indianapolis 500 winner Buddy Lazier, started 26th and finished 13th last year, the top finishing rookie in the race. "I've long thought there was going to be another Lazier win at Indianapolis," Byrd said. "As I watch Jaques race, he reminds me of the very first driver I took to Indianapolis, Rich Vogler. Jaques' true style is to take everything that's there all the time." Tommy O'Brien is the chief mechanic for the Jonathan Byrd TeamXtreme entry. Ray Sorenson is the team manager for both entries. 2001 INDIANAPOLIS 500 ENTRIES (as of March 16)
