Monday Practice: 4th 40.631 seconds 221.506mph

Eddie Cheever Jr., who clocked the fastest time of opening weekend for the 84th Indianapolis 500 with a 220.881mph lap on Sunday, was quick again today in his #51 Excite@Home Indy Race Car. Cheever recorded a fast lap of 221.506mph in his Infiniti-powered Dallara, placing him fourth overall on the Monday speed charts. Cheever: "The conditions have changed from what we had yesterday. The wind has changed a little bit - I know it must seem boring to always talk about the wind, people must think we're going crazy - but the wind is really important here. It's also warmer, and there are more cars and more rubber on the track, so you have to get used to tuning the car to these conditions. The race starts at 11:00am on May 28 whether you're ready or not, so you want to get the car tuned for that. We're just trying to figure out what the car wants.

"I don't think anyone out there is trying to get the top time - we're just trying to figure out what the cars will do. It's very early still. It's only Monday, and the fun and games start on Saturday. But I heard it's going to rain pretty soon, so we're all trying to get in what we can.

"We didn't quite get the balance right at the end, but we think we've found something that should give us some speed tomorrow. It was a good qualifying run. We did a bunch of laps above 221mph by ourselves so it's a good indication of what we can do in qualifying. If I can repeat that in qualifying I'll be very happy, but it's not quite as fast as we can go. We still have a little more work to do.

"It's really hard to tell if Robby (Gordon) did 223mph with or without a tow. But whether he did it with a tow or without a tow, it's a damn fast lap. I'd say that Greg Ray has his hands full."
