Team Penske, Castroneves Post Firestone's 52nd Indianapolis 500 Triumph
Helio Castroneves outdueled Team Penske teammate Gil de Ferran to claim victory in today's 85th running of the Indianapolis 500, handing Firestone its 52nd win in the process. Firestone has now been victorious in 52 of the 65 Indy 500s in which it has competed, an overwhelming 80 percent success rate and more victories than all other tire manufacturers combined.
Today's Indianapolis 500 win is the 11th for team owner Roger Penske but his first Indy triumph equipped by Firestone. Castroneves collected his fifth career open-wheel victory (all with Firestone) but his first in the Indy Racing League and first on an oval. Following the Penske duo in the finishing order were: Michael Andretti, third place; Jimmy Vasser, fourth; and Bruno Junqueira, fifth.
"Never in our wildest dreams when we returned to Indianapolis in 1995 did we ever think Roger Penske's legendary team would be running on our tires, much less winning this greatest of races," said Al Speyer, Bridgestone/Firestone Motorsports Director. "This is undoubtedly another huge milestone for the Firestone Racing program. Everyone at Firestone takes great pride in the effort put forth by Team Penske and all the teams today and this month. We take the greatest pleasure in knowing that the Firehawk tires chalked up well over 50,000 trouble-free miles this month, once again demonstrating the technological achievements of our engineering staff. It's wonderful to be at Indianapolis each year; it's even better to win at Indianapolis each year."
Driver/Owner Quotes Roger Penske, owner, Team Penske: "Our tires were terrific. In fact, the one (pit) stop where we got the lead, all we did was put fuel in, so the Firestone tires were outstanding."
Helio Castroneves, Team Penske Dallara/Olds/Firestone: "This is a dream come true. I wasn't thinking about history, I was just thinking about winning my first oval race. Here was the right place. The Firestone tires were fantastic. I had no trouble at all. Actually, the car changed more with the fuel going low than with the tires."
Michael Andretti, Team Green Dallara/Olds/Firestone: "We went up against a lot of things today and we still got a halfway decent finish. I just wish we could've finished a couple spots higher. Those doggone Penskes, why'd they have to come? The Firestone tires performed very well - as well as they always do, which is very good."
Race temperatures today ranged from 73 to 102 degrees track and from 65 to 75 degrees ambient (F). (The low temperatures were registered at 1 p.m., the high temperatures at 2:30 p.m.)
