INDY WINNER WHELDON EARNS DRIVER OF THE YEAR QUARTERLY HONORS
INDIANAPOLIS, Monday, June 27, 2005 -- 2005 Indianapolis 500 winner Dan Wheldon was voted as Speed Channel Driver of the Year for the second quarter of 2005.
Wheldon edged NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series points leader Greg Biffle in the vote by a panel of 18 leading journalists from across the U.S. and a fan vote on speedtv.com. Wheldon will receive a trophy and a Maurice Lacroix watch, both to be presented on Speed TV.
"I'm honored to be chosen out of so many talented drivers across many formulas," Wheldon said. "The team has been working hard all year, and it's a great acknowledgement of our efforts. We hope to continue our success throughout the year and look forward to being considered again for this award."
Wheldon dominated the second quarter of the racing calendar, winning the Indy Japan 300 in late April at Motegi, Japan, and then driving the No. 26 Klein Tools/Jim Beam Dallara/Honda/Firestone to victory at Indianapolis in May after a thrilling late-race duel with rookie sensation Danica Patrick.
Patrick won the fan vote and was sixth overall in the combined voting after starting and finishing fourth at Indianapolis, earning JPMorgan Chase Rookie of the Year honors.
In its 39th year, the Driver of the Year title is unique because it is the only award that encompasses all of the racing series in the United States and fan participation.
Wheldon, from Emberton, England, could become the first British driver to win DRIVER OF THE YEAR since Nigel Mansell in 1993.
