Wheldon fifth in Thursday practice for Indy 500
The 24-year-old English driver -- from Emberton in Buckinghamshire -- ran 124 laps in race trim, posting the fifth fastest speed at 228.128 mph (39.4515 seconds).
Wheldon is the only driver who has been in the top five every day he has practiced or qualified this month. After working on their qualifying set-up during the first week of practice, the Klein Tools / Jim Beam team turned their focus to the car's race balance. The team ran a couple of long runs during the practice session and turned nearly 300 miles before calling it a day.
Tora Takagi led Thursday's practice session with a speed of 229.157 mph (39.2744 seconds). Greg Ray was second quickest with a speed at 228.378 mph (39.4084 seconds). Felipe Giaffone followed right behind Ray at 228.255 mph (39.4285 seconds). Wheldon's Andretti Green Racing team-mate Tony Kanaan ran 126 laps in Michael Andretti's No 7T Team 7-Eleven Dallara / Honda / Firestone, posting a best speed of 224.921 mph (40.0140 seconds).
A total of 24 cars are currently in the field with Sunday's qualifying session remaining. Dan Wheldon has already qualified to start the race on Sunday 25 May from fifth place (the second row) on the starting grid. Practice continues at 'The Brickyard' today (Friday).
After yesterday's successful practice session, Dan Wheldon commented: 'We were just working on the race set-up today. The Klein Tools / Jim Beam car got better an d better throughout the day and I think we're in good shape. We aren't exactly where we want to be so my crew is going to work hard tomorrow (Friday). Right now I think we're very competitive but we want to make sure we cover all of our bases for when the race starts.'
Barry Green, Andretti Green Racing Consultant, said of Thursday's practice 'We did 124 laps today and Dan did a great job. What we are trying to do now is just rub on the race set-up a little. I don't think we are quite there yet but it was a good day and we were able to do some long runs. Dan was able to mix it up a little out there and we worked well with Tony (Kanaan).'
