SCHECKTER LEADS WAY FOR VISION RACING TAKING THIRD IN FIRST DAY OF FULL PRACTICE AT INDIANAPOLIS
SPEEDWAY, Indiana -- The opportunity to finally take to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in preparation for the 91st running of the Indianapolis 500 was not lost on Vision Racing driver Tomas Scheckter. The South African had the No. 2 Dallara/Honda/Firestone up to speed in a hurry. A late run in the day really gave Scheckter a boost as he clocked the third fastest speed of the day with a 224.783 mph run. He completed 59 laps on the day.
Vision Racing regulars, A.J. Foyt IV and Ed Carpenter took 16th and 17th, respectively, on the charts after posting speeds over 221 mph. Foyt turned a total of 49 laps today in the No. 22 machine, while Carpenter put 33 laps on the No. 20 Hitachi Power Tools special.
Team newcomer and fourth driver Davey Hamilton turned the least amount of laps in the No. 02 HP Vision Racing Dallara/Honda/Firestone, completing a top speed of 219 mph in 23 laps to end up 21st on the speed chart.
The Vision Racing fearsome foursome will ascend upon the track again tomorrow as scheduled practice time for Wednesday, May 9, will begin at noon (ET) and run until six p.m. The team will be working to gain even more speed as they prepare for AAMCO Pole Qualifications on Pole Day, this Saturday, May 12.
91st Running of the Indianapolis 500 Practice Results (May 7, 2007) and
Tomas Scheckter -- No. 2 Vision Racing Dallara/Honda/Firestone
"It's the first day of a very long month, but we were able to turn a decent lap at the end of practice today which put us up near the top. Of course, Tony (Kanaan) gave me a little bit of help there in the draft, but we were able to take advantage of it and log a good time. Nonetheless we are still improving as a team and I think we can work together to put together a good package for the race. Our run today was a good boost for the team and the guy's at the shop, but we also got a lot of work to do as we got some help on that lap."
A.J. Foyt IV -- No. 22 Vision Racing Dallara/Honda/Firestone
"I'm definitely glad to be back here. I thought the guys gave me a good car and we had a good day of practice. We didn't go as fast as we would have liked, but it's a long month and we've got a lot of work ahead of us and we'll keep working on it to get faster. I'm ready to get after it tomorrow to see what we can do."
Ed Carpenter -- No. 20 Hitachi Power Tools Vision Racing
"The car ran well just from unloading it so I'm happy with where we are at today. I'm really pleased that Tomas (Scheckter) was able to get out there at the end and click off some good laps. That's promising for the team. I think we have a good platform on the Hitachi Power Tools car to move forward from so I'm looking forward to getting back out there tomorrow and going faster."
Davey Hamilton -- No. 02 HP Vision Racing Dallara/Honda/Firestone
"We actually ran today with the car still in race setup, which was nice to help me get ready for the race. We did a few shock changes just to try a different grip level and I didn't like it as well, so we back to out standard setup that we've been running all weekend and it's been good. It was a hot day and the track was as slick as it's been for me yet so I felt the car moving around a little, but since we were still doing race setup stuff, the HP car felt good and I'm happy with it."
