IRL: Indy 500: Vision Racing day nine notes

SPEEDWAY, Indiana -- While the rains came down on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and ended practice early yet again today, sunshine actually soaked the track for the majority of the afternoon; making way for much practice in preparation for the 90th running of the Indianapolis 500. A total of 32 car and driver combinations took to the 2.5-mile oval today and Vision Racing's Rock & Republic sponsored, Honda-powered Dallaras were no exception.

With a great deal of rain limiting practice in recent days and postponing qualifying until this weekend, the team made use of the dry and open track to experiment with race setups and full-fuel stints. Townsend Bell in the #90 Rock & Republic Vision Racing Dallara/Honda/Firestone turned a best lap of 222.511 mph making him sixth best on the speed chart and fastest of the rookies.

Scheckter again rounded out the top 10 with a speed of 221.815 mph in his #2 Rock & Republic Vision Racing Dallara/Honda/Firestone. Carpenter, in the #20 Rock & Republic Vision Racing Dallara/Honda/Firestone, recorded a top speed of 221.505 putting him in the 13th spot.

All three drivers completed 181 combined laps while working together to simulate race-like conditions. The team will return to the track tomorrow for practice, which is schedule to start at noon and last until 6:00 p.m. (EDT). Qualifying will occur on Saturday, May 20 with all 33 starting positions up for grabs, while Bump Day is set for Sunday, May 21.

90th Running of the Indianapolis 500 Practice Results and Quotes (May 17, 2006):

Townsend Bell-- #90Rock & Republic Vision Racing Dallara/Honda/Firestone

On practice for the day:
"Practice was pretty good. We ran some full stints and that gave us a pretty good idea of where the tire and fuel balance stands with full tanks. We also used more race downforce so we pretty much worked on race setup all day and I think we found some areas that I think we want tune into. Unfortunately the rains came so there are still some things we'd like to try, but overall we are in the hunt."

Tomas Scheckter -- #2 Rock & Republic Vision Racing Dallara/Honda/Firestone

On practice for the day:
"It was great to finally get back out there and represent the team and Rock & Republic well by running a lot of laps and turning some good speeds. The team did a great job in setting up the cars and it was good to work with my teammates on race setups and conditions. We were still pretty quick given our objectives today so I'm confident in our cars for the race."

Ed Carpenter -- #20 Rock & Republic Vision Racing Dallara/Honda/Firestone

On practice for the day:
"Obviously we worked on race setup today, so it was good. Last year here I had a teammate, but we didn't really get to work together that much on race setups, so it was good to get out there with the guys. I think we are all fairly happy with our cars, but I think we've got just a little bit of work to do. We are off to a good start with race set up and we are just keeping the good trend going for the month. We've been pretty good everywhere we've started so I'm happy. I think the rain is going to catch some people out more than it is catching us out so I'm just looking forward to the rest of the month."
