SCHECKTER TAKES FOURTH AS VISION RACING PARTICIPATES IN FLURRY OF LATE TRACK ACTIVITY AT INDIANAPOLIS
SPEEDWAY, Indiana -- It was a hot one at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway today and as the sizzling afternoon sun began to set, IndyCar Series track activity got even hotter. Vision Racing driver Tomas Scheckter took advantage of the opportunity to post a 226.161 mph lap with just a few minutes left in practice. The initial run put him first on the speed charts, but he eventually ended up fourth on the day. He completed 32 laps in the No. 2 Vision Racing Dallara/Honda/Firestone.
Teammate Ed Carpenter did not receive quite the "tow" from the heavy traffic like Scheckter, but still managed to run his best lap so far this month in the No. 20 Hitachi Power Tools machine. Carpenter's 223.930 mph run was good enough for 14th on the speed charts. He ran a total of 45 laps today.
A.J. Foyt IV in Vision Racing's No. 22 machine was 20th on the day. Of Foyt's 42 laps, he finished with a best lap over 221 mph.
The No. 02 HP Vision Racing special rounded out the team lineup with Davey Hamilton behind the wheel. Hamilton continued to test different setups on the car in his 25 laps. His more than 219 mph was good enough for 23rd out of 26 cars.
Tomorrow's Fast Friday practice is set to begin at noon (ET) and run until six p.m. The Pole Day qualification drawing will begin at 6:15 p.m. First rounds of race qualifications take place this Saturday, May 12th for AAMCO Pole Qualifications on Pole Day. Only the top 11 spots will be filled on Saturday while spots 12 to 22 will be set on Sunday.
91st Running of the Indianapolis 500 Practice Results (May 10, 2007) and Quotes:
Tomas Scheckter -- No. 2 Vision Racing Dallara/Honda/Firestone
"We had a good run, but we had a little bit of help. These cars drive pretty good and if we can stick it somewhere in the top 11 on Saturday then I'll be happy. I've still got the whole month to work on things so I'm happy with where we are at. The car is got, obviously it's good in the tow, so I think we are in good shape."
Ed Carpenter -- No. 20 Hitachi Power Tools Vision Racing Dallara/Honda/Firestone
"Practice was good today. When we went out early today I felt like we had lost some speed and Indy will do that to you sometimes and you don't really know why. Sometimes it will just throw you a curve ball. So we came back and regrouped to take a couple steps backward which was good because then we went out and found some more speed. It's really hard to tell where you're at with everyone getting a tow and running different setups, but I think we are pretty good right now. I'm more confident than I was yesterday that we can put it in the top 11 on Saturday."
A.J. Foyt IV -- No. 22 Vision Racing Dallara/Honda/Firestone
"At the end we at least got the car feeling good, but we still didn't get the speed that we wanted. We made some changes to try and find some speed, but it just wasn't there. It's not making the most sense to us right now, but we haven't given up. It's still early and with my teammates running well, we'll go back and look at everything and get it figured out for tomorrow."
Davey Hamilton -- No. 02 HP Vision Racing Dallara/Honda/Firestone
"Today was one of those days where you have to try some things. I'm glad it's behind us at least. Of course, we went out in the heat of the day too which made a difference. The car is actually going to be fine we just tried some things and we found it was pretty slick out there and we actually found some things to change on all of the cars, but unfortunately I didn't have time to get back out there. But we were able to find some good things that helped the guys get faster so I'm happy with that and we'll get back after it tomorrow."
