Emotional Opening Day for Team Menard's Lazier at Indy

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (May 4, 2003) -- It was a special day for Jaques Lazier. After sitting out last year's Indianapolis 500 because of a back injury, Lazier was pleased to return with Team Menard for the 87th running of the Indianapolis 500.

"This is the first day of the Indy 500 and it's everything I dreamt it would be," said Lazier, who was out for the season last year to recover from an accident at Nazareth.

"It's as emotional as you can possibly get from my point of view," Lazier said. "You spend a full year preparing for this race. The second you get done with it you start preparing for the next year. This is 700 days in the making for me. I missed it last year. To be back here running again for Johns Manville/Team Menard is a dream come true for me."

Lazier completed 32 laps in the No. 2 Johns Manville-Team Menard Dallara/Chevrolet/Firestone today. With practice rained out an hour and a half early, he was 21st of 29 cars with a lap of 222.9120 mph, 40.3746 seconds.

Pole qualifying for the 87th running of the Indianapolis 500 is scheduled for May 10, with the race set for May 25. The race will be televised live on ABC and by the Indy Racing Radio Network. Live timing and scoring of all on-track activity can be found on www.indyracing.com.

One of the founding teams of the IRL IndyCar Series, Team Menard has two championships, 10 wins and an all-time record of 24 pole positions to its credit. Owned by John Menard, the Indianapolis-based team is supported by Menards, Johns Manville, Chevrolet, Menard Engine Group, Dallara, Firestone and Menard Cheever Technologies.
