INDIANAPOLIS -- Richie Hearn turned the 11st fastest lap in the Meijer/Coca-Cola Panoz-Chevrolet on the first day of practice Tuesday for the Indianapolis 500. Hearn, who finished third at Indy in 1996 and sixth in 2002, went 223.824 mph in the Sam Schmidt-owned entry. He did a total of 55 laps. Dan Wheldon was fastest on the day at over 226 mph.

Hearn had an unusual experience after sitting in the Meijer/Coca-Cola Special in the pits while waiting out an extended track inspection.

"I was sitting in the car for a long time (during track inspection Tuesday afternoon) and when I went back out, going into turn three, these big drops (sweat) came down into my face. It was like it was raining in my helmet."

Practice continues Wednesday with pole qualifying scheduled for Saturday. The 89th Indy 500 is May 29.
