RICE, PATRICK, DANA NAMED TO DRIVE RAHAL LETTERMAN CARS AT INDY
INDIANAPOLIS, Thursday, March 23, 2006 -- Rahal Letterman Racing filed three entries March 23 for the 90th Indianapolis 500, with 2004 Indy winner Buddy Rice, 2005 top Indy rookie Danica Patrick and 2006 rookie Paul Dana as drivers.
The 90th Indianapolis 500 is scheduled for Sunday, May 28 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Entries must be postmarked by midnight Wednesday, April 5.
Rice, from Phoenix, will drive the No. 15 Rahal Letterman Racing Team Argent Panoz/Honda/Firestone, with an identical backup entered. Ricardo Nault is the chief mechanic.
In 2004, Rice enjoyed a dream Month of May in Indianapolis, winning "The Greatest Spectacle in Racing" from the pole for the IRL IndyCar Series team co-owned by 1986 Indianapolis 500 winner Bobby Rahal and late-night television icon Dave Letterman.
Rice will attempt to make his third Indianapolis 500 start. He did not race or qualify last year after suffering an injury in a practice crash during the opening week of the event.
Patrick, from Phoenix, will drive the No. 16 Rahal Letterman Team Argent Panoz/Honda/Firestone, with an identical backup entered. Ed Daood is the chief mechanic.
Patrick enters her second Indianapolis 500 after producing one of the most memorable rookie performances in the event's history in 2005. She qualified fourth and finished fourth -- both all-time bests for a woman -- in a Rahal Letterman entry. Patrick also became the first woman to lead the Indianapolis 500, leading three times for 19 laps. She turned the top practice lap of the month, 229.880 mph, which was the fastest lap ever by a woman at IMS.
Those accomplishments helped Patrick earn the JPMorgan Chase Indianapolis 500 Rookie of the Year award.
Dana, a St. Louis native who lives in Indianapolis, will attempt to make his first Indianapolis 500 start in the No. 17 Rahal Letterman Racing Team Ethanol Panoz/Honda/Firestone. An identical backup is entered. Jim Prescott is the chief mechanic.
Dana passed the Rookie Orientation Program last May but was sidelined after suffering an injury in a practice crash during the first week of the event in the Ethanol Hemelgarn Racing entry.
Steve Dickson is the general manager of all three Rahal Letterman entries.
