RLR ABLE TO PRACTICE AT INDY IN BETWEEN RAIN SHOWERS
SPEEDWAY, Ind. - Rahal Letterman Racing, despite a practice day that was filled with rain showers, was able to log over 100 laps on the 2.5 mile oval at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Rahal Letterman Racing was led by rookie Jeff Simmons who posted the sixth fastest lap of the day at 221.716 mph.
Simmons, driver of the No. 17 Team Ethanol Honda/Panoz is preparing for his second Indianapolis 500 and topped the RLR trio for the first time this month.
"I was just glad to get on the track today," said Simmons. "The way the weather looked we thought it would be another washout. But we ran pretty well with the windy conditions. The car is actually feeling better with each day on the track. I am still new to the team but I feel good working with Buddy and Danica. We haven't run that much this month and the weather and track conditions seem to change daily. I think that is why we want to get some much track time. The engineers with Team Ethanol want to see all of the conditions because you just don't know what the race day weather will be on May 28. We still need more time and I hope the weather can improve for the weekend."
Danica Patrick was happier with the No. 16 Argent Mortgage Honda as the team found some improved stability in the Panoz chassis. Patrick was 11th on the speed charts with a fast lap of 220.900 mph.
"We made progress today running race level downforce," said Patrick. "We still aren't at the top of the speed chart, but we are making progress. Unfortunately we didn't get the uninterrupted track time that we need. The forecast looks good for tomorrow, so hopefully we can shake things out and get ready for qualifying."
Buddy Rice spent the day working on full tanks and fine tuning the RLR race set-up. Rice posted a fast lap of 220.137 mph, which was 13th on the day.
"We ran a lot of race setup today and I'm pleased with the direction that we are going with the No. 15 Argent Honda," said Rice. "I was happy that we got out today. I was kind of taking it easy in the garage and I didn't have on my uniform. All of a sudden, the boys on the crew yell that we are out in 15 minutes. The way the weather was today I figure it was another rainout. I wanted to go back to the hotel and watch some baseball. But then we were out and it was a very productive day for the Rahal Letterman team. We could use another day like today."
Sam Hornish Jr. edged his Penske Racing teammate Helio Castroneves for the quick lap of the day posting a 224.951 mph. Dan Wheldon posted the third quickest lap at 222.616 mph.
Practice will resume on Friday, weather permitting.
