Bump Day on Horizon as Indianapolis 500 Practice Resumes May 19
INDIANAPOLIS, Tuesday, May 18, 2004 -- Practice for the 88th Indianapolis 500 resumes Wednesday, May 19, as teams and drivers either continue the search for speed to earn a qualifying spot on Bump Day or work on honing their car setup for Race Day.
Gates open at 9 a.m. (EST) Wednesday with practice scheduled for 11 a.m.-6 p.m. General admission tickets are $5, with children ages 5 and younger admitted free.
Bump Day, the final day of qualifications, is set for Sunday, May 23. Seven spots remain open for the "500" field after MBNA Pole Qualifying on May 15 and Second-Day Qualifying on May 16 produced a mix of highs and lows for Indy Racing League® IndyCar® Series drivers and teams.
Buddy Rice, from Phoenix, scored his first Indianapolis 500 MBNA Pole Award on May 15 with a four-lap average of 222.024 mph in the No. 15 Rahal-Letterman Argent/Pioneer Panoz G Force/Honda/Firestone.
On the same day, veteran drivers Bryan Herta, Alex Barron and Felipe Giaffone all crashed in qualification attempts but came back strong May 16 to put themselves in the field.
Tora Takagi also endured the pressure of Indianapolis 500 qualifications and put his No. 12 Pioneer Mo Nunn Racing Dallara/Toyota/Firestone in the field during Second-Day Qualifying on his third and final attempt in that car.
Practice is scheduled for the IndyCar Series from May 19-22, along with Menards Infiniti Pro Series^Ù practice May 20, qualifying May 21 and the Futaba Freedom 100 race May 22.
The 88th Indianapolis 500 is scheduled to start at 11 a.m. (EST) Sunday, May 30.
