Bump Day on horizon as Indianapolis 500 practice resumes May 15
INDIANAPOLIS, Tuesday, May 14, 2002 -- Practice for the 86th Indianapolis 500 resumes Wednesday, May 15, as some teams and drivers continue preparation for Race Day while others will stay hard at work honing setups for Bump Day that hopefully will earn them a spot in the 33-car field.
Gates open at 9 a.m. (EST) Wednesday with practice from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. General admission tickets are $5, with children ages 5 and younger admitted for free.
Bump Day, the final day of qualifications, is set for Sunday, May 19. An unexpected surge in qualification speeds and a lack of cooperation from Mother Nature have set the stage for potentially one of the most intriguing and exciting Bump Days in recent memory.
Many drivers predicted at the start of the event that 225 mph would be a comfortable 10-mile speed for a four-lap qualification run. But Bruno Junqueira, driver of the No. 33 Target Chip Ganassi Racing G Force/Chevrolet/Firestone, pushed the MBNA Pole speed to 231.342 mph, and Billy Boat, driver of the No. 98 CURB Records Dallara/Chevrolet/Firestone, is the slowest of the 24 current qualifiers at 226.589.
Nine spots remain in the field, and notable drivers such as two-time Indy 500 winner Arie Luyendyk, A.J. Foyt Racing teammates Greg Ray and Airton Dare, and Team Green teammates Paul Tracy and Dario Franchitti are not yet qualified and looking for the speed to earn a spot for the race.
Several notable Indianapolis 500 rookies also are on the outside looking in, including former Formula One winner Johnny Herbert, Alex Barron, Anthony Lazzaro and George Mack.
To add even more to the mix of surprises that could arise on Bump Day, Tseveral talented drivers not named to drive a car also are looking for Topen seats he 86th Indianapolis 500 is scheduled for May 26.
