INDIANAPOLIS, Saturday, May 7, 2005 -- All of the great plot twists and turns of the 89th Indianapolis 500 will start to unfold Sunday, May 8 as the "Greatest Spectacle in Racing" gets underway on indystar.com Opening Day at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
The first of two days of the Rookie Orientation Program will take place on the historic, 2.5-mile oval from noon-5 p.m. (local time). Indianapolis 500 rookies must pass four on-track speed phases of the test to qualify for participation in the event this month.
Rookies expected to participate in ROP are Sebastien Bourdais, Ryan Briscoe, Jeff Bucknum, Patrick Carpentier, Paul Dana, Tomas Enge, Scott Mayer and Danica Patrick.
Veteran drivers will be on track for the first time Tuesday, May 10.
Public gates open at 9 a.m., with children age 12 and under admitted free. Tickets for adults are $5 each and are available on a two-for-one basis by presenting a coupon from advertisements running in The Indianapolis Star on May 1, 6 and 8.
Fans who arrive early on indystar.com Opening Day will receive a free indystar.com/Indianapolis 500 collectible trading pin courtesy of The Star. Pin distribution begins at 11 a.m. at Formula One garage No. 34, just south of the Bombardier Pagoda.
A host of family-oriented activities will take place off track at the Speedway during indystar.com Opening Day:
* The band Living Proof will play from 1-2 p.m. and 3-4 p.m. on the Coca-Cola Stage in the Pagoda Plaza.
* A question-and-answer session with 2004 Indianapolis 500 winner Buddy Rice will take place at 2 p.m. at the Coca-Cola Stage.
* An autograph session with IndyCar Series drivers will take place at 3 p.m. in the Pagoda Plaza.
* The IndyCar Series Fan Experience, a set of exciting, interactive entertainment properties for fans, will be on the IMS grounds.
