MI-JACK TO BE AN ASSOCIATE SPONSOR OF NEWMAN/HAAS RACING TE CENTRIX'S INDY 500 PROGRAM
HAZEL CREST, Ill. -- MAY 12, 2005 -- Mi-Jack Products, Inc., the leading U.S. manufacturer of specialized RTG cranes, announced today that it would be an associate sponsor on the two Team CENTRIX entries that five-time championship winning Newman/Haas Racing will prepare for the legendary 2005 Indianapolis 500 to be held on May 29. Sebastien Bourdais will attempt to qualify for his first Indy 500 while teammate Bruno Junqueira will make his fourth start in the historic event.
Mi-Jack's involvement in open-wheel racing began at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in 1992, and now starting their 14th season, the Mi-Jack banner has been carried to the starting line in over 200 events and 8 times in the "Greatest Spectacle in Racing." For the Month of May in 2005, Mi-Jack will have its name prominently displayed on the No. 36 and No. 37 Honda-powered Panoz/Firestone machines entered by Newman/Haas Racing Team CENTRIX, which is owned by actor/race car driver Paul Newman and racing entrepreneur Carl Haas.
"We have the highest respect for the Newman/Haas Racing Team and consider it an honored opportunity to be associated with Carl and Paul in the Indy 500," said Mike Lanigan, President of Mi-Jack Products, Inc.
The 2005 entry will mark the 15th for Newman/Haas Racing in the Indianapolis 500 and their first two-car effort since 1995. The team returned to Indy for the first time since 1995 in 2004 with a one-car program for Junqueira, who qualified fourth and finished fifth. Prior to 2005, the team prepared a total of 21 entries at Indianapolis for drivers such as Mario and Michael Andretti, Nigel Mansell, Paul Tracy and Junqueira. Newman/Haas Racing's highest finish in the Indianapolis 500 is second place with Mario Andretti in 1985 and Michael Andretti in 1991 although team drivers have led many laps on the 2.5-mile Superspeedway. Mario Andretti also brought the team its highest start in the event when he won the pole position in 1987.
In Junqueira's rookie event in 2001 he started 20th and finished fifth. He won the pole position in 2002, led the first 32 laps but retired in 31st place with engine failure. Last year in his first Indy 500 with Newman/Haas Racing he qualified fourth despite limited practice time, led 16 laps and finished fifth. Bourdais will be making his debut on the high-banked 2.5-mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway track as well as in an Indy Racing League race car.
"I'm very happy that Mi-Jack is involved with our Indy 500 program," said Carl Haas, co-owner of Newman/Haas Racing. "Mike Lanigan and everyone at Mi-Jack are racers at heart and that philosophy matches ours. We are looking forward to a great month together."
