If the Indy 500 is delayed by rain and Gordon has to leave for Charlotte, McGehee will fill in for Gordon Sunday at Indy.

INDIANAPOLIS, May 24 - During Carb Day activities Thursday at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Team Menard owner John Menard tabbed Robby McGehee to be the back-up driver for Robby Gordon in the Menards/Childress/Cingular Dallara Chevy #31 should the start of Sunday's 86th annual Indy 500 be delayed by rain.

Gordon is doing double-duty on Sunday, as he plans to compete in the Indy 500 and then fly to Charlotte, N.C. to race in the World 600 NASCAR Winston Cup race Sunday night. If the start of the Indy 500 is delayed until the point Gordon has to leave Indianapolis to travel to North Carolina, however, McGehee would take over his ride for the day.

McGehee, of St. Louis, was fitted for Gordon's car on Friday.

The Indianapolis weather forecast is for showers on Saturday night but clear weather on Sunday.

McGehee admits it's a long shot, but he also knows that the weather in Indianapolis in May is as unpredictable as the moonlight is bright on the Wabash.

"I want to thank both John Menard and Robby Gordon for selecting me," said McGehee. "It's a huge honor to be chosen by a team the caliber of Team Menard. It's unlikely that I'll get the chance to be in the car, but if they need me I'll be ready."

Gordon qualified 11th in the field of 33 at an average speed of 229.127 mph.
