Matsuura Avoids Close Calls in Limited Track Time at Indy
Weather: At 3:45 pm (the start of practice activities), 57º F under partly cloudy skies with strong winds at 21 mph from the northwest. At the start of Happy Hour (5:00 pm), temperature remains 57º F with winds 14 mph from the northwest and gusts up to 23 mph. Yellow for moisture at 5:38 pm.
Practice Summary: The track opened for practice at 3:45 pm, the result of intermittent rain throughout the day. Matsuura completed eight laps by the 30-minute mark, and was shown ninth quickest with a speed of 219.554 mph. The team worked on changes to the #55 Panasonic ARTA car in pit lane, as opposed to returning to the garage, as another weather front was looming. Matsuura concluded his practice runs at 5:30 pm, just prior to the rain, and on the heels of a second close call. Matsuura was directly behind two separate accidents that occurred today involving Arie Luyendyk Jr. and Thiago Medeiros, and narrowly avoided contact with Medeiros as he slid down the race track.
Qualifying for positions 1-33 will take place next Saturday, May 20th. Sunday, May 21st will be reserved for Bump Day.
Kosuke Matsuura, #55 Panasonic ARTA Dallara/Honda/Firestone:
"We came back to the primary car today. Yesterday, my backup car didn't feel good. The primary car feels a lot better, but we struggled a little bit with front grip. At the end, we found the right direction. The biggest thing for me today was the two cars that spun in front of me. Thiago [Medeiros] was right in front of me and I nearly hit him."
