SPEEDWAY, IN . . . Miller Lite driver Jimmy Vasser turned 36 laps [90 miles] on the first day of practice for the 2002 Indianapolis 500. Vasser took to the track in mid-afternoon officially marking the debut of Rahal/Letterman Racing at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

The Miller Lite Dallara/Chevrolet turned a fast lap of 224.281 mph making Vasser the 18th fastest driver on the first day. The team initially planned to run about 100 miles in the back-up car on the 2.5-mile speedway, but the team stopped the initial run after 29 laps in favor of taking the primary car on track to perform a leak check.

Practice will continue on Monday at the Speedway. Qualifying for the May 26th running of the 86th Indianapolis 500 will be this coming weekend (May 11th and 12th) followed by Bump Day on May 19th.

Jimmy Vasser (#8 Miller Lite- Dallara/Chevrolet on Firestone tires) - "What a perfect day to start the month of May. It was absolutely a beautiful day in Indianapolis and it was great to see the fans turnout and support us. It was pretty much a standard first day of practice. We took the car out an put it through a couple of runs just to get the feel of the car and the track. Emotions run high on the first day at the Speedway and it is good to get a few laps under your belt. It has been several weeks since we last tested here and based on our experience at Fontana and from testing here previously I think tomorrow we can begin building on what we have learned so far."
