Buhl braves cold conditions to top speed charts at Indy

Indianapolis, Ind. (May 17, 2002) - Front-row qualifier Robbie Buhl was the fastest of the day in practice at Indianapolis Motor Speedway today, where rainy conditions shortened the practice session.

"We got out today in the backup car to see what we could learn about tire wear during some fast laps," Buhl said. "We tried a few different things and feel like we made some progress. We are trying to learn as much as we can with the limited green-flag time we have. With the weather as it is, we do what we can and then call it a day."

In temperatures that dropped to the mid-50s, Buhl turned the quick lap of 228.077 mph in the Team Purex/Aventis Dreyer & Reinbold Racing Infiniti. Shigeaki Hattori, Sarah Fisher and Tomas Scheckter also turned laps at the speedway today with Infiniti power.

Practice resumes Saturday, May 18 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. (EST). The 86th running of the Indianapolis 500 starts at 11 a.m. (EST) Sunday, May 26.
