Kanaan & Gordon front row qualifiers at Indy.

Tony Kanaan and Robby Gordon placed their Honda-powered Andretti Green Racing machines on the front row in cold and blustery "Pole Day" qualifying action Sunday for the 87th running of the Indianapolis 500-mile race.

Gordon, substituting for the injured Dario Franchitti, was the first driver to break the 230-mile-per-hour barrier in qualifying, only for teammate Kanaan to better his time later in the afternoon. That appeared to be good enough to secure the pole for the Brazilian until just 90-minutes remained in the day, when two-time defending race winner Helio Castroneves edged his countryman for the honors.

In addition to Kanaan and Gordon, Andretti Green rookie Dan Wheldon was an early pace setter and ended the day fifth in the starting field, with former "500" race winner Kenny Brack alongside for a total of four Hondas in the top six grid positions. Another Honda-powered rookie, Roger Yasukawa, put his Super Aguri Fernandez Racing Honda solidly in the middle of the fourth row, 11th in the field.

The fifth row of the starting grid will be all Honda powered, with Michael Andretti making his final start as a driver, followed by Greg Ray and Shinji Nakano. All eight Honda-powered drivers qualified in the top 15, with a total of 24 drivers completing qualifying runs. The next on-track activity at the speedway will be four days of practice starting Wednesday, May 14, followed by the traditional final qualifying "Bump Day" taking place next Sunday, May 18.

Tony Kanaan (#11 7-Eleven Andretti Green Racing Honda) qualified second: "The whole team did a great job. I have to thank Michael [Andretti] and [co-owners] Kim [Green] and Kevin [Savoree] for giving me all their support. The car was not the way I wanted it this morning, but the team made a couple of changes this afternoon and ended up giving me a great car."
