Matsuura & Fernandez Lead Final Indy Practice
Teammates Kosuke Matsuura and Adrian Fernandez paced the 33-car starting field Thursday in "Carburetion Day" practice, the final on-track activity at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway prior to Sunday's 88th running of the Indianapolis 500.
As in qualifying, Honda drivers and teams again dominated the time sheets, posting seven of the eight fastest speeds today. Matsuura, the fastest of eight Indy rookies in the field, will be starting Sunday's 200-lap event from the outside of the third row (9th), just behind team owner/driver Fernandez (6th), who will be making his third start, but his first since 1995.
Rahal Letterman teammates Vitor Meira and Roger Yasukawa rounded out the top five as Honda-powered G-Force chassis appeared to be the preferred combination on a humid, warm day. Pole qualifier Buddy Rice, in the third Rahal Letterman entry, ran 11th fastest today, and then added to the Rahal Letterman Racing trophy case by winning the annual pit stop competition.
After qualifying last Sunday with only a handful of practice laps, Access Motorsports owner/driver Greg Ray ran a strong seventh today, just ahead of the Newman-Haas Honda-powered entry of Bruno Junqueira. Tony Kanaan led the four-car Andretti Green Racing effort with the sixth-fastest speed.
"The Greatest Spectacle in Racing" is scheduled to start at 12 p.m. EDT Sunday, May 30, and will be televised live in the U.S. on ABC.
Kosuke Matsuura (#55 Panasonic/Autobacs Super Aguri Fernandez Racing Honda) Fastest in "Carb Day" Practice: "It was a very, very good practice today. This whole month, my team, my mechanics have done a very good job and the car seems to be very good - both cars, mine and Adrian's. The car is very fast and also good for drafting, the car has a very good balance. Everything is perfect. Next, we have to think about our pit stop strategy and race strategy. I am ready for the race and I am very confident."
