INDIANAPOLIS -- Robby Gordon spent Saturday morning in his garage at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway waiting out a rain delay to qualify his Meijer/Coca-Cola Dallara-Chevrolet for the 88th Indy 500 before returning to Richmond, Va., for Saturday night's NASCAR Cup Chevy American Revolution 400. Gordon Friday qualified his Cingular Wireless Chevy sixth for that event. He finished 19th in Friday night's NASCAR Busch Series 250 at Richmond in his Fruit of the Loom Chevy.

"The rain doesn't help anybody," Gordon said Saturday morning in Indy. "I've spoken with Brian (Barnhart, IRL racing director) and he knows our situation. For us, 2:30 (p.m., Indy time) is when we have to leave. We qualified the Cingular Wireless Chevrolet sixth and it's not worth giving up that starting position. (NASCAR penalty for missing the drivers meeting is to start last.)

"We'll know after (pre-qualifying Indy practice) what shot we have (at pole or front row.) With the way the weather is, I think four laps at 221 mph would be pretty good. We didn't lose a lot of (track time) to our competitors the last two days (when Gordon was in Richmond) because of the rain here (Indy).

"It is what it is. We'll do the best we can."

Gordon had a 65-minute flight from Richmond to Indy Friday night, after the Busch race, in a Citation 10 private jet.
