Wheldon Gives Firestone Its 56th Indy 500 Victory

Dan Wheldon, the strong favorite coming into this year's Indy 500, lived up to expectations, giving Andretti Green Racing its first victory and Firestone Racing its 56th win at "The Greatest Spectacle in Racing".

Despite warm temperatures and the off-season resurfacing of Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the Firestone Firehawk tires that equip the entire field at every Indianapolis 500 Mile Race performed flawlessly throughout the month of May and today's race.

"The Firestone tires were very good," said Wheldon. "For the speeds that we were doing, to have that grip level for that length of time is always beautiful, but it's not unexpected. I never doubt Firestone."

"The Firestone tires were perfect all day," added winning owner Michael Andretti. "We did a smart thing putting on that new set at the end, and Dan's car just got stronger and stronger."

Quote from Al Speyer, executive director, Firestone Racing: "It was an awesome race since there were so many competitive cars battling for the lead, but no one individual driver dominated the race. Congratulations to Dan Wheldon and the Andretti Green organization -- they were clearly the best of the field at Indy today. We are particularly pleased with the performance of the Firestone Firehawks -- it was a hot, sunny day and yet there were many teams who ran tires longer than just one fuel run. The confidence that these drivers and teams show in our tires is the best reward for us."

Firestone Performance Award: Sam Hornish Jr. of Marlboro Team Penske earned the $20,000 Firestone Performance Award for leading lap 108 of today's race. The award commemorates the fact that Firestone has been a tire supplier in every IRL IndyCar Series in league history, a total of 108 races in all with today's running of the Indy 500.

Race temperatures ranged from 120 to 139 degrees track and from 78 to 89 degrees ambient (F).

Race temperatures ranged from 49 to 59 degrees track and from 26 to 32 degrees ambient (C).
