Speedway, IN (May 15, 2004) -- Red Bull Cheever Racing finished Pole Day Qualifying for the 88th Indianapolis 500 with mixed emotions after Alex Barron's No. 51 car crashed in Turn 1 during his qualifying run.

Earlier in the day the No. 52 crew was celebrating as rookie teammate Ed Carpenter completed his first qualifying run. Carpenter in his Chevy-powered machine recorded a four-lap average speed of 218.590 mph earning a well-deserved 16th place.

"In practice this morning we were working with the best car we've had all week," said 23-year old Carpenter. "We kept the same setup for qualifying, but didn't get going as fast as we had hoped. I'm just really glad to have qualified for my first Indy 500. My crew has been so great all week and it's the opportunity of a lifetime to be here."

During the last half hour of qualifying, Indy Racing League IndyCar Series teams lined up in pit lane to make their final qualifying attempts. Barron, 2002 Indianapolis 500 Co-Rookie of the Year, was lapping the 2.5-mile oval when he made contact with the SAFER Barrier during his qualifying run.

"I was going into Turn 1 and just before the apex the car went loose and I spun into the wall" Barron said. "With cool temperatures there were a lot of incidents on track today. I wish I could have given the crew a good qualifying run. We'll just have to get out there and try again tomorrow."

The Red Bull Cheever Racing No. 51 crew will prepare for the second day of qualifying at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Sunday, May 16. Qualifying is scheduled from 11am -- 6pm (CDT).
