Rookie Rice thrilled with Opening Day at Indy
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (May 4, 2003) -- Red Bull Cheever Racing driver Buddy Rice officially began his first Indianapolis 500 today, with opening day for the 87th running of the historic race.
Rice completed 46 laps in the rain-shortened practice session that ended just more than an hour and a half early. The No. 52 Red Bull Cheever Racing Dallara/Chevrolet/Firestone lined up 13th fastest of 29 cars with a 225.4620 mph, 39.9180 second lap.
"It went quite well, other than this rain which shortened up the session," Rice said. "We knew it was coming so we got in what we wanted to. We are pretty happy with the day.
"The Indy 500 is one whole racing season packed into a month. It's a big race. It's the place everyone wants to be for racing here in the United States. It's something I have always wanted to do as well. I am glad I've got the opportunity with Red Bull Cheever Racing."
Pole qualifying for the 87th running of the Indianapolis 500 is scheduled for May 10, with the race set for May 25. The race will be televised live on ABC and by the Indy Racing Radio Network. Live timing and scoring of all on-track activity can be found on www.indyracing.com.
