Speedway, IN (May 19, 2004) -- Indy Racing League IndyCar Series teams spent the first part of May focusing on the qualifying sprint. Today teams started to prepare for the 500-mile marathon.

Red Bull Cheever Racing driver Ed Carpenter in his No. 52 Chevy-powered entry logged more laps than any other driver recording 127 laps on the 2.5-mile oval speedway.

"We ran a lot of long runs today because we were making sure we have a good, comfortable car to work with for the race," said 23-year old Carpenter. "We put a lot of miles on the Chevy engine and ran full tanks to work on our race setup. It was a productive day being able to focus solely on the race now that qualifying is over."

Carpenter finished the day in 12th position with a fast lap of 217.511mph. At 5:30 (CDT) rain fell over the Indianapolis Motor Speedway putting an early end to practice. Before the ominous clouds came in, California native Alex Barron in the No. 51 Dallara/Chevrolet/Firestone was able to log a fast lap of 217.764mph, edging himself above his teammate into 11th position.

"Race setup is our primary focus for the rest of the month," Barron explained. "We're working with heavy fuel loads and checking race setup so we have the best car possible come race day. We also worked on aero balance and running the car in traffic to see how the car handled."

Alex Barron is preparing for his third Indianapolis 500, while teammate Ed Carpenter will have his rookie run at the 88th Indy 500. Practice resumes tomorrow at 11am (CDT).
