Speedway, IN (May 20, 2004) -- Red Bull Cheever Racing continued to perfect race setup on the No. 51T and No. 52 Chevy-powered entries during practice for the 88th Indianapolis 500. Indy Racing League IndyCar Series teams logged 2,026 laps during today's on-track activity.
American Ed Carpenter turned 87 of these laps and spent the majority of his day adjusting his car to run well in traffic on the 2.5-mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway. He finished the day as the fastest Chevrolet in 10th position with a 216.697mph fast lap.
"At the start of the day we had a really good race car when we were running on our own," the 23-year old Carpenter explained. "Later on we ran in traffic and realized we didn't have as good of a car as we could have, so we spent the rest of the afternoon making adjustments. We improved a lot as the day went on; we just need to work on our pace now."
Under cloudy skies his teammate Alex Barron, 2002 Indy 500 Co-Rookie of the Year, turned a fast lap of 213.928 mph as his No. 51 crew ran with full tanks for the majority of the day.
"We need to run in more traffic and for longer periods of time to really get a good feel for how good our car is," Barron said of today's practice session. "We did a lot of hot stops today and worked on fuel mileage. We didn't use a lot of tires because we were somewhat behind after qualifying."
Red Bull Cheever Racing has one Indy 500 win under their belt with owner Eddie Cheever Jr. claiming the title in 1998. Watch May 30 as they go for their second win at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
