This class of 2002 marks the fastest field in the history of the Indianapolis 500 with an average qualifying speed of 228.648 mph. The previous record was 227.807 mph set in 1996.
Billy Boat, who had the slowest qualifying speed in the field, recorded a speed faster than last years pole speed. The last time the slowest car in the field was faster than the previous years pole sitter was in 1972 when Cale Yarborough was the slowest qualifier at 178.864 mph.
Johnny Herbert was unable to participate in today's final qualifying session due to commitments with the Champion Audi team in the American Le Mans Series. Herbert had hoped to qualify early today before boarding a private plane to Sonoma, Calif. to compete in the final portion of the sports car race at Sears Point Raceway. Unable to secure a private plane with sufficient range and speed to make the race in California, Herbert was forced to abandon his plans to compete in final qualifying.
The CARA Charities Fashion show will take place on Friday, May 24 at 11 a.m. at the Westin Hotel in downtown Indianapolis. Elaine Irwin Mellencamp, the official spokeswoman of the Indy Racing League, will serve as the honorary chairperson of the event. Mellencamp will make a special appearance on NBC's "Today" show with Katie Couric on Wednesday, May 22 in New York City when she will change a tire outside the "Today" studios in Rockefeller Plaza.
Carb Day will be held Thursday, May 23, when the final practice session will be held for cars qualified for the race. After the final practice session, the Coors Indy 500 Pit Stop Challenge will take place in front of the main grandstands. After the pit stop competition, a concert by Nine Days and Better Than Ezra will take start at 3:30 p.m. on the Pepsi Stage behind the pagoda.
