Indianapolis, IN (May 17, 1998) - The field is set for the 82nd running of the Indianapolis 500. Eight drivers were added to the field today, including last year's winner.
Defending champion, Arie Luyendyk will start from the inside of the tenth row even though his speed was faster then his pole speed from 1997. "Yesterday, the moment I went out of the pits to practice, the motor wouldn't run. The day was a complete loss for us. The second motor wouldn't run in the afternoon qualifying, either," Arie said. "The crew put in a motor today, the last one we had available, which had way too many miles on it to be crisp. But it performed. The engine problems were unexpected, but Roush has given us good engines all along."
At 4:41 p.m. Jimmy Kite filled the field of 33 by qualifying at 219.290, putting Billy Roe on the bubble. Forty two minutes later, Roe was bumped from the field when Mike Groff put Jonathan Byrd's G Force Aurora in the field at an average speed of 216.704 miles per hour. "We had a rough week" Groff said. "It came down to the wire. There is some work to do, and we didn't get to run on full tanks, and it doesn't look like we're going to get to do it."
Eliseo Salazar was put on the bubble when Groff qualified. Billy Roe, who had been bumped out, got in his primary car and set out to put himself back in the field. Roe qualified, bumping Salazar out. Salazar, who had used his three attempts in his No. 15T car, managed to secure a car from Stan Wattles, who was safely in the field at 217.477 mph. Both drivers are using the Riley and Scott chassis. It was too little too late. "We tried so hard. We started this week with the fourth-quickest time and then the crash" Salazar said. "It seems no matter what we tried, it was not enough."
The cars take to the track on last time for a final practice session on Carburetion Day on Thursday, May 21. The three hour session starts at 11:00 a.m.
The 82nd running of the Indianapolis 500 starts at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, May 24, 1998.
