Speedway, IN (May 10, 2004) -- Rain may have interrupted the second day of practice at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, but it didn't stop Red Bull Cheever Racing from running consistent lap times in both the morning and afternoon sessions.
The No. 52 crew had another efficient day with Ed Carpenter piloting his Dallara/Chevrolet/Firestone into fifteenth position. Carpenter logged many laps around the famed 2.5-mile oval speedway and showed improvement on yesterday's lap time by running a 41.2558sec, 218.151mph fast lap.
"We started to trim the car out today and ran on our own a lot," said Carpenter. "We logged very consistent lap times and are following our original plan and keeping our focus. My engineers made some improvements in the car and we're definitely headed in the right direction."
Teammate Alex Barron in his No. 51 Red Bull Cheever Racing Dallara/Chevrolet/Firestone turned a fast lap of 41.3650sec, 217.575mph in the morning session, putting him in seventeenth place. Barron, currently in ninth place in the IRL driver points, did not participate in the afternoon practice session.
"We worked today on evaluating different qualifying and race setups," Barron said. "The rain put a minor setback to our practice schedule and I didn't get to run in the afternoon session because my crew was working on my race car from my incident at the Open Test. We still have a few more days before qualifying to keep practicing, so we're not too worried about missing the afternoon session."
Day three of practice at Indianapolis Motor Speedway is scheduled tomorrow from 11am -- 6pm (CDT). Pole day on Saturday, May 15 is the first opportunity for IRL IndyCar Series teams to qualify for the Indianapolis 500.
