Wheldon fourth during Indianapolis practice.
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (May 9, 2003) -- Rookie Dan Wheldon kept the Klein Tools/Jim Beam Dallara/Honda/Firestone near the top of the speed charts today, turning the fourth fastest speed (230.669 miles per hour, 39.0170 seconds) in just eight laps of work.
In what marked the final full day of practice before Saturday's "Pole Day" qualifying, the Klein Tools/Jim Beam crew worked in the garage most of the day, choosing not to head out to pit lane until happy hour -- the final hour of practice. Wheldon jumped in the car and was immediately quick, steadily moving up the time sheet and ultimately landing in the fourth spot. The team has been fast all week and still holds the fastest lap of the month at 232.202 miles per hour which Wheldon set during yesterday's practice. Based on Friday evening's draw for qualifying order, Wheldon is slated to be the 10th car to make a qualification attempt.
Wheldon's Andretti Green Racing teammate Robbie Gordon set the fastest speed of the day at 231.362 miles per hour (38.9000 seconds). Gordon was followed by Scott Sharp at 230.829 miles per hour (38.9899 seconds). Scott Dixon clocked in third fastest at 230.714 miles per hour (39.0094 seconds). Wheldon's other AGR stable mates, Team 7-Eleven drivers Tony Kanaan and Michael Andretti posted the eighth and 15th fastest laps, respectively, at 230.157 and 228.308 miles per hour.
Television coverage for tomorrow's "Pole Day" qualifying gets underway at 12 p.m. EDT on ESPN before switching to ABC Sports at 1 p.m. EDT. The 87th running of the Indianapolis 500, which will be held May 25, is slated to go green at 12 p.m. EDT and will air live on ABC.
Dan Wheldon #26 Klein Tools/Jim Beam Dallara/Honda/Firestone
"This week has gone really well. The Klein Tools/Jim Beam team has done a good job and the crew has worked extremely hard. We need to qualify as well as possible tomorrow and then shift our concentration to the race. My teammates have been working on race setup this week so I know we have a good place to start to find the right balance."
Barry Green, Andretti Green Racing Consultant
"Everything has gone better than planned for us. We come out and hit our goals each and every day and we've been the fastest on a couple of those days. I'm really impressed with Dan's approach, his style and his ability. He does what he is told and when he is out on the track he does his job well. I'm very impressed."
