Wheldon tops Thursday practice chart at Indy with fastest speed of the month.
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (May 8, 2003) -- Rookie Dan Wheldon took the Klein Tools/Jim Beam Dallara/Honda/Firestone to the top of the practice charts at Indianapolis Motor Speedway again on Thursday and did it in style with the fastest speed of the month.
Wheldon, who also topped the speed chart on Tuesday, immediately assumed the #1 position on the board after just a handful of practice laps late this morning with what stood as the fastest time of the month at that point. Then, after being bumped from the top of the list by Tora Takagi during the middle of the afternoon, Wheldon returned to the track late in the day and upped the ante on the 23rd of his 28 laps, clocking in at 232.202 miles per hour (38.7594).
Takagi's best lap was at 232.007 miles per hour (38.7919 seconds) followed by Helio Castroneves with the third fastest lap at 231.595 miles per hour (38.8610 seconds). Fellow Andretti Green Racing teammate Tony Kanaan posted the fifth best lap at 231.061 miles per hour (38.9508 seconds) and Robby Gordon was ninth best at 230.214 miles per hour (39.0941 seconds).
Practice will continue tomorrow at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway as the teams prepare for "Pole Day" qualifying on Saturday, May 10. The Indianapolis 500 will take the green flag at 12 p.m. EDT and will be aired live on ABC Sports.
Dan Wheldon #26 Klein Tools/Jim Beam Dallara/Honda/Firestone
"Just like I said on Tuesday, being the fastest today isn't anything to read in to. I had a big tow on that lap and I don't think it is relative to the time we did. The Klein Tools/Jim Beam crew worked hard and it is good for them to see the #26 at the top of the speed charts, but there is still a lot of stuff that can happen."
