INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (May 5, 2003) -- On only his second day in an IndyCar Series car in the last year, Robby Gordon got up to speed quickly at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Gordon lapped the 2.5-mile oval in the #27 Archipelago/Motorola Dallara/Honda/Firestone with a best speed of 227.735 miles per hour (39.5196 seconds) and posted the seventh fastest practice time of the day.

The Archipelago/Motorola team concentrated on the car's race balance running 70 laps including a full tank run. The team plans to continue working with its race balance tomorrow before trying to find its qualifying setup. Gordon is substituting for Andretti Green Racing driver Dario Franchitti who was injured in an off track incident in April. He will be trying to complete the "Double," finish both the Indianapolis 500 and the annual 600-mile NASCAR event on May 25 for the fifth time in his career.

Tora Takagi set the fasted speed today at 229.019 miles per hour (39.2980 seconds). Scott Sharp was second quick at 228.766 miles per hour (39.3415 seconds) and Scott Dixon was third fastest, posting a best lap of 228.427 miles per hour (39.3999 seconds). Gordon's teammate, rookie Dan Wheldon was 5th fastest on the day with a speed of 228.233 miles per hour (39.4334 seconds). Gordon's other teammate Michael Andretti was 28th today with a best time of 223.025 miles per hour (40.3542 seconds). .

Practice will continue tomorrow at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway as the teams prepare for "Pole Day" qualifying on Saturday, May 10. The Indianapolis 500 will take the green flag at 12 p.m. EDT and will be aired live on ABC Sports.

"We just did a few laps yesterday and we got the Archipelago/Motorola car up to speed in just a few laps so I think we are looking okay. We are definitely learning a lot about our race setup. We had some understeer earlier in the day but we made some changes and have the front end biting now. Our main goal is to get as good of a race balance as we can. In happy hour we did want to put in a good speed so on our last run we took some wing out of the car. We weren't really in a setup we would qualify in, it was more of my race setup that we just trimmed out a little bit."

"We worked really hard on our race setup today. We're close to a setup we like but I think we need one more day of working on it to be happy. Right now we are at about 90 percent and this morning we started at about 70 percent. So, now we need to get the final 10 percent and then we will be looking good."
