Robby Gordon tops "Fast Friday" speed charts.
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (May 9, 2003) -- Robby Gordon took the term "Fast Friday" to heart today at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, putting the #27 Archipelago/Motorola Dallara/Honda/Firestone at the top of the speed charts in the final day of practice before qualifications begin on Saturday for the Indianapolis 500.
With less than 40 minutes remaining in "Happy Hour," Gordon went out on track to finalize his qualifying setup during 28 laps of practice. Gordon's fastest lap was his 23rd, when he circled the 2.5-mile "Brickyard" at 231.362 miles per hour (38.9000 seconds). The Archipelago/Motorola team is obviously happy with the results and is now confident heading into qualifying tomorrow. Based on the Friday evening draw for qualifying order, the #27 car is slated to be the 22nd on track.
Gordon was followed by Scott Sharp at 230.829 miles per hour (38.9899 seconds). Scott Dixon clocked in third fastest at 230.714 miles per hour (39.0094 seconds). Gordon's Andretti Green Racing teammate Dan Wheldon was fourth quick at 230.669 (39.0170 seconds). Team 7-Eleven's Tony Kanaan and Michael Andretti posted the eighth and 15th fastest laps, respectively, at 230.157 and 228.308 miles per hour.
Television coverage for tomorrow's "Pole Day" qualifying gets underway at 12 p.m. EDT on ESPN before switching to ABC Sports at 1 p.m. EDT. The 87th running of the Indianapolis 500, which will be held May 25, is slated to go green at 12 p.m. EDT and will air live on ABC.
Robby Gordon #27 Archipelago/Motorola Dallara/Honda/Firestone
"The Archipelago/Motorola team has always said the most important time is when it comes time to qualify. We worked on race balance Monday and Tuesday. Wednesday we took off and then we worked on qualifying setup yesterday and today. I think my lap today was pretty good. I think it is going to take a lap of 230.5 to be on the front row, so I think we might have something for them tomorrow."
Kyle Moyer, Team Manager, Archipelago/Motorola
"Working with Robby (Gordon) has been really, really good this week. Early in the week we concentrated on having a solid race car and when it came time for Robby to put in a quick lap he responded. We tried a few different things for our qualifying car and I think we have settled on a good setup that we can adapt to the changing weather conditions."
