MIAMI, FL (February 16, 2002) - A total of nine Indy Racing League drivers took part in a rain-shortened day of testing at Homestead-Miami Speedway's Open House on Saturday where fans witnessed teams testing in preparation for the 20th Anniversary Grand Prix of Miami. The Grand Prix of Miami, the season-opener for the Indy Racing League, takes place Thursday, February 28 - Saturday, March 2 at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
Following a rain delay of over four hours, the Indy Racing teams tested until nearly dusk in windy conditions. Sam Hornish Jr. of Pennzoil Panther Racing and Gil de Ferran of Marlboro Team Penske posted the fastest times in the abbreviated day of testing.
"It was pretty windy today," said Hornish, the defending Grand Prix of Miami and Indy Racing League champion. "We were just making sure that the car was underneath me all day. This track has similarities to Indianapolis."
Due to the rain-shortened day, Marlboro Team Penske decided to test with de Ferran for a third consecutive day at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
"Today was a bit frustrating but only because obviously we started late," said President of Penske Racing Tim Cindric.
"Throughout the day the winds changed, and we found it a bit unproductive with the change of conditions with what we were trying to accomplish. We chose to go ahead and run again with Gil and try to finish up with some of the things we were trying to prepare for prior to the race. We'll try to get some long runs in."
Indy Racing teams will continue private testing next week in preparation for the Grand Prix of Miami, the Indy Racing League season-opener at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
