Sharp's Strong Run in Toyota Indy 300 Ends Early
Scott Sharp look poised for a top-five finish in the Toyota Indy 300 this afternoon. Unfortunately, Sharp found himself the victim of a multi-car accident on Lap 159 of the 200-lap race when teammate Kosuke Matsuura spun after getting into tire marbles on the high side of the race track on a late race restart. Sharp, who started sixth, was running in seventh position at the time.
Scott Sharp, #8 Delphi Panoz/Honda/Firestone:
"Kosuke [Matsuura] and Tomas Scheckter were racing really close. Kosuke went to go around him and I don't know if they touched or what happened. Kosuke spun, and once he spun in front of Tomas, there was nowhere to go and everyone piled into him.
"We ended up having a little bit of a tougher day with the Delphi Fernandez car than we expected at the start. We worked hard to get the car to turn better, and obviously that worsens with the amount of turbulent air in the traffic you have in front of you. We spent most of the day working on that, and it really started to come around. On the last run prior to the restart, we were in great shape. As other guys I could see started pushing up, we stayed good. We were running with the lead pack, saving fuel and trying to ride it out to the end to have a final dash to the finish. We thought we were really going to be in good shape. We put our best set of tires on for the end and, unfortunately, I was taken out on the restart."
John Ward, Race Engineer:
"In the end we come away disappointed today but if you stand back and look at it, it is a long season. We ran quite well towards the end of the race. We had initial problems with the balance of the car. I don't think we were in for a win, but a top five was definitely in the cards. This was a very hopeful beginning for us. Scott is a very fast driver and he is good to work with. We just have to take this as a little bump in the road, keep our sights on the big prize and go forward."
