Toyota Indy 300 at Homestead-Miami Speedway, Homestead, Fla.
March 24-26, 2006 -- Round 1 of 14
Race Distance: 300 miles or 482.8 kilometers (200 laps around the 1.5-mile oval).
Firehawk Race Tires Supplied: Firestone delivered 732 Firehawk racing radials for use this weekend. All were produced at the Firestone Technical Center in Akron, Ohio. At the direction of Indy Racing League officials, each entered car will receive eight sets of tires (32 total) this weekend, to be used at the team's discretion throughout practice, qualifying and race sessions. Firestone's race tire development team has chosen a proven specification for this weekend's event. Based on the construction used previously on 1.5-mile ovals, the spec features left- and right-side compounds designed, in part, to increase heat resistance. This spec was employed last season at Chicagoland Speedway and was successfully tested at Homestead-Miami Speedway earlier this month.
Quote from Al Speyer, Executive Director, Firestone Racing: "The Firestone Racing team is certainly ready to kick of the 2006 season. Homestead is always an exciting place to start the year, but it also continues to be one of the biggest challenges we have as a tire manufacturer. The banking, the surface, the layout and the sometimes very hot ambient temperatures -- all of this makes this one of the most demanding venues we tackle, and we have to be on our toes every year when we come here. But the tire spec we've brought has been tested in competition and also performed very well in testing here earlier this month -- we expect the same this weekend. As always, our engineers will be working closely with the teams and monitoring tire performance to make sure that's the case."
Firestone Performance Award: During the 2006 season, Firestone Racing will continue to present this award in conjunction with each IndyCar Series event. The award commemorates Firestone's status as the only tire manufacturer to have participated in every IRL event and is traditionally given to the driver who, in each IndyCar Series event, leads the lap number corresponding to the total number of races run in series history. This weekend, the leader of lap 121 will earn the $10,000 award.
