Mechanical Malfunction Ends Franchitti's Day at Homestead-Miami Speedway
HOMESTEAD, Fla. (March 6, 2005) - ArcaEx driver Dario Franchitti suffered a mechanical failure just 12 laps into the 2005 Indy Racing League® IndyCar® Series season-opening Homestead- Miami Indy 300, resulting in a 22nd-place finish Sunday at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
Franchitti started the event from fifth place and drove the ArcaEx car into third place at the end of the first lap. He maintained his position near the front of the field over the initial 10 laps of the event. However, the mechanical failure ended his day just a few laps later.
Klein Tools/Jim Beam driver Dan Wheldon earned the victory with Sam Hornish Jr. taking second and Team 7-Eleven driver Tony Kanaan placing third. Vitor Meira was fourth while Helio Castroneves finished fifth.
Franchitti and the rest of the IndyCar Series teams return to action in two weeks at Phoenix International Raceway for the XM Satellite Radio Indy 200 on March 19. The event will be televised live by ABC Sports, beginning at 3 p.m. (EST).
Dario Franchitti, #27 ArcaEx Dallara/Honda/Firestone:
"This was a very frustrating day after all the effort that the ArcaEx team has put into preparing for the start of the season. We did pretty well during testing over the winter and it comes down to this -- a mechanical failure so early in the race. It's just very frustrating and not the start that we were looking for."
Kyle Moyer, General Manager, Andretti Green Racing:
"It's disappointing to start the season this way -- dropping out with a mechanical failure. Now we have our work cut out for us regarding the championship. We're lucky it happened during the first race and not the last event of the season, so we have plenty of time to work with. I still believe we're contenders, even considering what happened today. Sometimes you just have days like this."
