Open-Wheel Standout Noda Completes Rookie Test

INDIANAPOLIS, Thursday, Feb. 14, 2002 - Japanese open-wheel veteran Hideki Noda completed the speed phase of his Indy Racing League rookie test Feb. 11 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Noda, a native of Osaka, Japan, completed each of the four 10-lap phases of the test in just 82 laps, with an unofficial top speed of 205.7 mph on the 1.5-mile oval.

Noda drove a G Force/Chevrolet/Firestone prepared by new IRL entrant Convergent Racing.

"Hideki adapted very quickly and made a very smooth transition to the IRL car," said Don Batchelor, managing partner for Convergent Racing. "It was our first test, and everything came together even better than we had anticipated."

Indy Racing League Technical Manager Mark Bridges observed Noda.

"He did a fine job," Bridges said. "He was very smooth and very comfortable in the car. He adapted to it very quickly and got right with the program."

Noda started racing karts in 1982 and since then has competed in Formula One with the Larrousse team in 1994, F3000, Indy Lights and British Formula 3. He won the Indy Lights race in 1997 at Portland, Ore. Noda has raced in the Japanese Formula Nippon open-wheel series for the last three years.

Indy Racing League Vice President of Operations Brian Barnhart must clear Noda before receiving his Indy Racing League license.
