Indy racing horsepower wizard Herb Porter was seriously injured Thursday night in an auto/truck accident on I-74 west of Indianapolis. Shortly before 9:30 PM a semi- had crashed and was leaking what was believed to be hazardous material. Two other semi's arranged their trucks to block the highway so that vehicles would not proceed into the hazardous area. Returning from dinner in a passenger car driven by former Indy driver Ebb Rose, Porter was riding in the back seat. Approaching the accident scene, Rose's car crashed into the blocking semi- trucks and the 85 year old Porter received foot and leg injuries and two collapsed lungs. Rose was injured less severely, however he suffered possible fractures of his legs. Rose's wife Jean received a wrist injury and has subsequently been released from hospital Details of the accident escaped the local press. Further information will be added to this note and it is learned.
Porter was honored Friday night at the Indianapolis 500 Old Timers Hall of Fame, and Lloyd Ruby accepted the award on Porter's behalf.
Tom Carnegie announced from the podium that Porter was reported by the hospital staff as being one of toughest fighters they had seen and was showing the stamina of a 30 year old in fighting off his injuries. A special ceremony is planned when Porter recovers from his injuries. Len in Indy
