VELEZ, GOODYEAR END FIRST SPEEDWAY TIRE TEST FOR NEW IRL CARS
INDIANAPOLIS, Friday, March 7, 1997 -- Fermin Velez and Team Scandia got in more testing despite chilly temperatures today at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway to wind up a Goodyear tire test, the first for the new Indy Racing League machines at the 2 =BD-mile oval.
Velez ran 27 laps in the #33 Mi-Jack Scandia Alta Xcel Royal Purple Dallara/Oldsmobile Aurora to go with a handful of systems check laps Thursday. The test was abbreviated because the temperature hovered around 40 degrees.
Alessandro Zampedri was greeted with smiles and handshakes from Team Scandia teammates after he walked through the chute between Gasoline Alley and the pits without crutches for the first time since suffering severe ankle and foot injuries on the last lap of the 1996 Indianapolis 500.
"(Off crutches) for 10 days now," Zampedri said. "I've been walking much better. Now it's more of a mind game, trusting my left leg after being off of it for eight months. I'm doing a lot of exercise. I feel more comfortable every day. A month from now -- we haven't set a date for me to get in the car yet -- I'll be in pretty good shape. I'm definitely on schedule for my goals. My goals were much higher than the doctors and those who worked with= me."
