INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (June 19, 2003) -- Andretti Green Racing driver Dario Franchitti will miss the remainder of the 2003 Indy Racing League (IRL) IndyCar Series season. After continued discussions with orthopedic surgeon Dr. Terry Trammell, Franchitti has decided to undergo back surgery.
The Edinburgh, Scotland native, who started three races this year, sustained a fracture to his back during an off-track incident in April. Franchitti's most recent start came last Sunday at Pikes Peak International Raceway, where, after a 10 week absence he drove to a fourth-place finish behind the wheel of the #27 Archipelago/Motorola Dallara/Honda/Firestone.
The team has not yet announced who will replace Franchitti during the final 10 races of the 16-race schedule.
Dario Franchitti, Driver - #27 Archipelago/Motorola Dallara/Honda/Firestone
"I'm really disappointed that I will not be able to compete for the remainder of the IRL season. After assessing the options available, I feel that to do the surgery now is the best thing for me. By having the surgery, I can be back to 100 percent fitness at Andretti Green Racing for the 2004 IndyCar Series Championship and the Indianapolis 500. I want to thank everybody at AGR for their continued support and look forward to continued success with them."
Michael Andretti - Owner, Andretti Green Racing
"I feel awful for Dario right now. I know this is one of the hardest decisions he has ever had to make and I know he is making the right choice. Dario is a very important part of Andretti Green Racing and he is doing the right thing for himself and the team. For sure, the team is 110 percent behind Dario."
